Omar Vergara grew up in San Bernardo (Santiago), a city known as the capital of folklore. He started playing the guitar in elementary school with the band Pichi Huentru (small people in Mapuche language). Then, with a folkloric Andean band (Killantay) he participated in various festivals in Santiago, winning a few. He was playing the percussions, the guitarron, the cuatro and the guitar. His next group, Herba Nueva, was more fusion and experimental; they shared stages with Christina González, Sol y Lluvia, Jorge Yañez, Eduardo Gatti. The band was renamed (Decreto) and had activities in universities, on the radio, the TV, which led Omar to meet artists likes Hugo Moraga and Congreso, who became his biggest influences. He arrived in New York in ’89 and quickly became a regular at the Peña del Bronx, directed by Victor Toro. He played there with various artists, including Hugo Moraga. Through the Chilean artist Carolina Bermúdez (painter, sculpturor and dancer) he met Rodrigo. They started playing in art exhibit opening for Latin artists, which gave birth to the idea of forming a band: first Guillatún, then Los Chamanes.

Comenzó a tocar guitarra en la escuela básica, con el grupo folklórico Pichi Huentru (gente chica en Mapudungun). Después, con un grupo folklórico andino (Killantay) participó en varios festivales en Santiago, ganando algunos. Tocaba percusión, guitarron, cuatro y guitarra. Su próximo grupo, Hierba Nueva, era mas fusión y experimental; compartieron escenarios con Cristina González, Sol y Lluvia, Jorge Yañez, Eduardo Gatti. La banda fue renombrada (Decreto). El Grupo Decreto tuvo actividades en las  universidades, la radio, la televisión, y así Omar se encontró con artistas como Hugo Moraga y  Congreso, quienes resultaron sus más fuertes influencias. Llegó a NY en 89 y pronto se hizo regular de la Peña del Bronx, dirigida por Víctor Toro. Tocó allá con varios artistas, incluyendo Hugo Moraga.  A través de la artista chilena Carolina Bermúdez (pintora, escultora y bailarina) llegó a conocer a Rodrigo Bermúdez. Comenzaron juntos a realizar música en exposiciones de artistas latinos en New York (opening). Ahí nació la idea de formar un grupo, nació Guillatún y posteriormente Los Chamanes.
